what we do.
Generate GC facilitates ambitious, place-based art through mentorship, collaboration, and community.
As a City of Gold Coast initiative, we support artists across disciplines to experiment, connect, and produce high-impact, conceptually driven work.
The program consists as a two-year structure where creatives across art forms are encouraged to push boundaries and to take creative risks. Joining a cohort of local creatives, participants connect with established artists and get support to expand their artistic practice.
supporting local artists.
Generate GC is designed for artists who want to expand their creative practice and explore new ground. We focus on:
Mentorship & Collaboration – Artists join a vibrant cohort, working alongside peers, producers and established professionals.
Conceptual Development – We encourage deep thinking, testing, and iteration of bold new ideas.
Professional Production – Projects are realized with high production values, ready for diverse audiences and environments.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.
2018
The first iteration, known as Generate, was developed in consultation with the Creative Leads for the GC2018 Arts and Cultural Program, Bleach Festival*, and the Office for Commonwealth Games.
It was co-funded by the City of Gold Coast and the Office of the Commonwealth Games, and resulted in partnerships with six local arts organisations to present eight local productions in Festival 2018 for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
2019
Following Festival 2018, the program became Generate GC. The 2019 and 2021 iterations were directed by Executive Producer Emma Porteus under the national Situate Art in Festivals banner, through Salamanca Arts Centre and later Tasdance, in Tasmania.
Emma was the driving force behind the program’s success since 2019, including designing the strategy and delivery of Generate GC for the City of Gold Coast across the triennium.
From midway through 2024, the Generate GC program operates as a wholly City of Gold Coast initiative through the Arts and Culture Unit, with local artist Rebecca Ross taking the lead from Emma Porteus as Program Producer.
2024
Generate GC continues to stay true to its original vision and acts as a 100% Gold Coast creative platform for the development of new and ambitious work.
Rebecca Ross still leads Generate as Program Producer, bringing her deep local knowledge and a fresh creative lens to it’s newest chapter.
Rebecca also spearheads Next Gen GC, a sister program empowering GC artists aged 18–25 to build their practice and vision.
New Artists. New Work. New Energy.
