JAX COMPTON
Jax Compton (she/her) is a proud Wuthathi and Zenadth Kes woman, mother, wife and creative practitioner. She currently lives on Bullongin, Yugambeh country.
Jax found her desire to formulate a creative practice at the QL2 Centre for Youth Dance in Canberra. This led her to pursuing further study at NAISDA Dance College, Queensland University of Technology, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance/Indigenous Studies) with Distinction, and a Master of Fine Arts – Cultural Leadership at NIDA.
Throughout her career Jax has experienced an array of amazing opportunities artistically as a performer, choreographer, and creative producer. She has worked with companies such as, Force Majeure, Performing Lines, Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Opera House, QL2, and NITV, and artists Ghenoa Gela, Andrea James, and Danielle Micich.
While navigating her practice, Jax has worked professionally in the arts and culture, education, sports, events, and not-for-profit sectors and in 2015, Jax and husband Darren co-founded Muggera Cultural Enterprise, a cultural performance and education company based on Yugambeh country, that showcases Minjungbal culture both nationally and internationally.
Jax has continued to build a practice that dismantles performative allyship, promotes fundamental change, and highlights the value and importance of First Peoples stories. Her practice explores movement, voice, storytelling, and cultural identity to interrogate the artistic world to embrace First Peoples, their women, their mothers, their storytellers, both now and into the future.
Jax is unequivocally dedicated to her family, culture, identity, and the creative practices of First Peoples.
