KATHY MACKEY
Kathy Mackey is a Gold Coast based artist .Her work explores complexities of space and light within natural and man-made sites through photomedia, painting and installation.
After completed her Ph.D exegesis The Post-tourist Mirror in 2011 at Griffith University , Mackey has continued exploring the performative aspects of photography as a shared experience.
She is very interested in the history of travel and architectural photography and rituals such as family slide nights . Her work often features constructed interior sets , upon which she projects images from other settings - creating a distorted relationship between the interior “view” and the projected image.
As long-term local resident , she has observed the way the site of Gold Coast has changed and has also remained the same , particularly in terms of its residential spaces and the people who live in them. Kathy is also very passionate about artist in residence projects in schools and how the arts and sciences can become an important vehicle for creative problem solving .
Throughout her career, she has been recognised through several awards and residencies including: Gold Coast City Art Prize Parks Victoria Residency 1999; Monash Gallery of Art Bowness Photography Prize 2006; Queensland Smithsonian Fellowship 2014
