HOW DO WE HOLD SPACE FOR TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS?

ARTIST: JAX COMPTON
PROJECT: YALNUN [LIGHT FROM SUN - YUGAMBEH]
PROJECT PARTNERS: TBC

Yalnun [Light from sun – Yugambeh] holds space for the clan groups of the Yugambeh speaking peoples of the Gold Coast region through the practice of Traditional Cultural Expression. Yalnun is an invitation to gather at beachfront sites, framed by the coastline and encircled by sand, to collectively welcome the rising sun.

Yalnun commences on the beach before sunrise, welcoming the healing and regenerative nature of the sunrise and the new day. With the iconic Gold Coast coastline as the backdrop, the sun illuminates the site from dark to light, waves and birds creating atmospheric sounds.

Through a process of healing and cleansing, Yalnun explores cultural practices and connectivity for Traditional Custodians.

Jax completed Research and Development for Yalnun in August 2024.
