WHAT can A VIEW REVEAL ABOUT PERSONAL AND PUBLIC CONNECTIONs to SPECIFIC SITEs?
PROJECT: THE LOOKOUT
ARTIST: LYLE DUNCAN
PROJECT PARTNERS: TBC
The Lookout is an invitation to explore vantage points and water views, which oftentimes are exclusive to the occupiers of luxury beachfront apartments, and to create a centrepiece for the gathering of people and the community. The Lookout is focused on the relationship between the spectacle and spectator. It hones in on the idea and action of looking at looking, and the phenomenon of gathering to view.
The Lookout takes form as two readymade grandstands arranged to face each other, with the grandstands having direct sightlines to the horizon and/or water. Sitting in a non-traditional space and devoid of sporting events or entertainment, the centuries old multi-tiered form of the grandstand takes on new meanings. The work is intended to be of scale and to have a visual and spatial impact on the surrounding landscape. It also presents a significant opportunity to host public programs connected to the work and its presentation context
The work consists of two ready-made modules, fabricated from extruded aluminium, and hired for the presentation of the work. The two grandstands are positioned so as to offer an unobstructed view of the opposite grandstand, and with substantial breathing space around them. The size and scale, footprint and presentation duration are to be determined in relation to site and in conversation with the presenting partner.
